Contemporary Moral Problems by James E. White

Happiness depends upon ourselves.

ITETHIC

ARISTOTLE

  1. What is happiness, according to Aristotle? How is it related to virtue? How is it related to pleasure?

According to Aristotle happiness is self-sufficient.  Happiness according to Aristotle is not pleasure, it is not honor and it is no wealth, Aristotle said happiness is an activity of ones soul in accordance with its virtue. It is both Moral which comes from a daily habit, training or the real character of a person and Intellectual Virtue is the most perfect happiness found in a certain activity.

  1. How does Aristotle explain moral virtue?

Aristotle defines moral virtue as the only way to an effective action. It is what a person with a good character does, desire or loves.  According to him it is ones habits that regulate the desires of our appetitive nature.

  1. Is it possible for everyone in our society to be happy, as Aristotle explains? If not, who cannot be happy?

It is possible if every person knows the meaning of happiness. To those who know what being good and being happy would be those persons who would live happily. Those who are selfish, greedy, and immoral people would not find happiness.

A.  Aristotle characterizes a life of pleasure as a suitable for beasts. But what if anything, is wrong with a life of pleasure?

Pleasure is a personal craving for something. Pleasure is being abused by people who don’t get enough happiness from something they do. Life with pleasure needs balance, its needs to be in between.

B. Aristotle claims that the philosopher will be happier than anyone else. Why is this? Do you agree or not?

I agree because like a teacher/master/Sensei or a guru seeing his disciple do his duties would be happy. Same with Aristotle when he see people following his teachings he would be happier than his disciples
